Beautifully designed, full-color catalog, which chronicles the 2007 multi-country exhibition of Khuree Tsam -- 108.
Mask making is exemplified by the 108 masks themselves, as well as the accompanying religious dance used in Buddhist ceremony of the Khuree Tsam where traditional cultural forms practiced in Tibet and Mongolia for centuries. In Mongolia this wonderful artistic Buddhist institution died out after 1937, when the monasteries were destroyed during the purges under communism. Only a few gorgeous masks remained as monuments to the historic artisans, until 2007, when GanNa and his young artistic group revealed their remarkable re-creations.
About the Author:
GanNa's list of accomplishments include his tenure with the groups "Tumen Erkh" and "Temuzhin Monkh," as well as with the National Folk, Song and Dance Ensemble of Mongolia, but he is best known for his creation of the "five meter high" Buddha statue in the temple "Gunzeshoinei" in St Petersburg, shown to the right, and his 10 year effort to return to the world "Khuree Tsam-108" a collection of 108 traditional Mongolian masks and costumes.
