19th Century Mongolian Distemper with Highlights of Gold
Behind glass in a wooden gau for over a century, the colors and condition remained extraordinary well-kept for this thangka depicting Shakyamuni flanked by Chenrezig and Manjushri. The form of Manjushri depicted here, one of the five main ones as embodied in the Five Peaked Mountains, is somewhat unique in that he is not wielding the characteristic flaming sword of wisdom. There are many forms of the eight great bodhisattvas, some are based on the Indian tradition, and other from visions of historical masters.
Provenance Tibetan Museum Society
Condition Excellent with some mild age appropriate wear including creasing and surface abrasion, as well as some pigment loss.
Measurements Approximately 11.5" height X 9" width
